FIRST LADY

Sonya Taylor Stevenson

A 1990 summa cum laude graduate of Southern University, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Sonya earned a B.S. in Accounting and has completed additional coursework in education and business administration at the University of Houston.

Sonya’s professional work includes experience as an Internal Auditor and Financial Analyst for Exxon Chemical Americas. Upon her husband’s calling into the ministry and subsequently founding The Fort Bend Church of Sugarland, TX, she began her career in the nonprofit sector working as a Budget Analyst, Career and Technology Education Teacher and Business Manager for the Houston Independent School District. She worked in this capacity for several years prior to assisting her husband with the church’s founding, in 2004, and becoming the Executive Director of The Fort Bend Church serving a congregation of over 7500 members.

Borrowing from the common educational phrase, “no child left behind,” as Executive Director, Sonya has personally adopted this philosophy concerning the children and youth of The Fort Bend Church and surrounding communities. Because of this, Sonya founded KALEIDOSCOPE, a 501(c)3 organization, with a mission to develop youth as leaders and scholars in 2013. Annually, money is raised to support the educational development and social enrichment of youth and children in Fort Bend County. Although spiritual in nature, the church is used as a vehicle to draw youth and children through creative ministry programming that provides constant exposure to the arts, educational opportunities, health awareness, and missions/outreach efforts. With the assistance of community partners and the KALEIDOSCOPE Guild, formed in 2018, to date, over $175,000 has been given in scholarships, stipends, and programs that benefit youth and children in Fort Bend County and surrounding areas. She regularly supports educational initiatives in the Fort Bend Independent School District. Also passionate in supporting parents with children affected by Autism, she pioneered the SPECTRUM Ministry which provides a spiritual network for parents and children and ensures a safe environment during worship and ministry activities.

Sonya has served several years on the board of the Baptist Standard Publishing Company, serves as First Vice President of Membership in the Fort Bend County Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, is a proud Associate Member of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, a charter member of the newly formed Katy Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and member of the Southern University Alumni Association. She has also served as a guest lecturer alongside her husband at Princeton Theological Seminary.
Beyond these efforts and host of active engagements, Sonya’s work has allowed her to receive recognition and numerous awards for her work in the community including the Houston Community College Unstoppable Leadership Award.

Sonya believes in the continued investment in the future of our youth and children, and her goals include establishing a school as an extension of the ministry of The Fort Bend Church. This educational establishment will support students in the surrounding communities while challenging them academically and growing spiritually--nurturing and developing them into strong leaders of tomorrow.

Married since 1992, Sonya and her husband, Byron, are high school sweethearts and are the proud parents of two daughters: Claire Alexandra Stevenson, Esq. and Cydney Victoria Stevenson.
